The Season of Lent:

For forty days beginning from this Wednesday – Ash Wednesday the Church begins the liturgical season of Lent. It is a lengthy period of forty days marked by intense prayers, almsgiving and fasting. Gloria is not said or sung except on Feast and Solemnities. Alleluia is not said even on Feast and Solemnities. All the liturgy of Lent is addressed to the celebration of Easter, both for catechumens in their various stages of preparation and the faithful who recall their own baptism and do penance for their sins. Penance is a part of the life of every Christian. The obligation of Friday Penance is particularly apt during lent.

Ash Wednesday:

Next Wednesday Feb 22 is Ash Wednesday. It is a day of fasting and abstinence. On this day the Church begins Lenten preparation. Ashes are blessed and distributed at Mass. There will be two masses at 9.00am and 7pm.
