Welcome to Our Lady of the Assumption parish website.

Please take a moment to look at our Parish website – it is a great facility with excellent links to useful sites and much more. We would welcome your comments/suggestions for improvements

Statue of Our Lady of the AssumptionDeptford is a place steeped in history and especially that of the Royal Navy.  The Parish of The Assumption of Our Lady, Deptford, has an important place in that history. Since it's foundation as a Mission in 1842, the parish has served the Catholics who have worked in the shipyards and on the railways in that part of London. Many of them came from Ireland and much of the story of Deptford is their story too. In more recent years the parish has become a home to people from many places - each in their own way contributing to the continuing development of Deptford and the life of the Church in this Diocese.

PARISH FEAST - OUR LADY OF ASSUMPTION -15 August 2010

3 days celebration - 168th Anniverssary...

This year parishioners were blessed with a three day celebration to mark the Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption and also the 168th Anniversary of Deptford Parish. The feast was planned for three days, beginning with Family Rosary and Talk on "Christian Values in relation to family life" on 13th August. The talk was delivered by Sister Doris Frances Ginigeme.  It was a great evening that brought the Parish together to reflect on family and the need to preserve this natural institution. The old and young shared their experience.

The second day 14th witnessed the social gathering of parishioners at Deptford Park. The day began with mass celebrated by Frs. Eustace and Augustine. The other events that followed were Charity Football match between the Youth and Catholic Men Organization. Children were treated with facial painting and a group of youths performed. There was a lot to eat and drink and of course music to set the day alight.

The three day Feast was concluded with a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Bishop Patrick Lynch. The Parish Priest Rev. Fr Eustace Durugbo and his Assistant Fr. Augustine Franklin concelebrated at the mass. Delivering his homily, Bishop laid emphasis on Family and the need to strengthen its values. As well as encouraging love, peace and unity in the family, he urged the Parishioners of Our Lady of the Assumption to be conscious of the multicultural nature of the parish that is a larger family.

During the Thanksgiving Mass, Twenty four members of the parish, old and young received the Blessing of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI for their dedication and service to the Community. Handing the Blessing Award, Bishop Pat thanked them for their examplary life in the community. One of the recipients, Agnes Agjei Mensah, expressed thanks to God for the singular honour done to her and her colleagues. She thanked parishioners for their support.

At the end of the Mass there was reception in the Parish Hall. Young Irish Dancers graced the occasion, while parishioners treated themselves with food, drinks and music.

20th Anniversary - 27 June 2010

Our Parish Priest, Fr Eustace Durugbo, had a surprise party organized by all parishioners to mark his 20th anniversary of ordination.  Fr Eustace was ordained on 23 June 1990 at which time he also attained his 2nd degree in Theology.  He began his missionary career in 1982 when he completed his 1st degree in philosophy.  Fr. Eustace in the last couple of years successfully completed his Masters in Pastoral Studies.  Well done Fr Eustace!!!

Very humble and modest, Fr Eustace thought he had escaped marking the celebration; however parishioners led by PPC members knew better...

For a surprise, it was definitely a good and big one... Fr Eustace was very touched and emotional throughout the celebration…”  He said: “my brothers and sisters you have thought me something else today..." I am very grateful to you all" “Thank you very much for everything, I am very grateful”!!!

Amongst the guest of honour, were The Deputy Mayor of Lewisham Cllr Alan Smith and priests and pastors from Southwark and Lewisham Councils. The Deptford Churches Together was represented by Rev. David and Merissa from the Methodist Church and Ann.

Congratulation Fr Eustace and Well done to all parishioners!!!
